Look Up In The Sky, It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s a… Picnic Basket?

25May12

Thanks for all the great answers to yesterday’s question. I got lots of good responses and it was a pretty diverse group of answers. There wasn’t a lot of people choosing one power over another. In case you missed it, this was the question:

If you could have one super power, what would it be?

This is a question Sean asks me all the time, and every time he picks one of two things and I pick the same thing. Sean either chooses teleportation or telepathy. He either wants to be able to go any place he wants in an instant or be able to move things just by thinking of it and looking at them. Now here’s my theory on people choosing super powers. I think we tend to choose things that most fit what our personality is really like. Sean, God love him,is a great kid but not always the most motivated to do things, so of course he would pick something where he either doesn’t have to move on his own, like teleporting, or where he can move things without moving, like telepathy. Out of everyone who answered, every answer I saw fits well with the personality of the person who answered it. We want to be able to control the things that seem most out of our control, in my opinion. So you’ll choose to be able to fly because it will let you move quickly from place to place so you have more control over what happens, or because, like Superman, you want to be able to get to as many places as you can to help as many people as you can. I used to have students write about this in their journals early on because I think it reveals a lot about what type of person you are. Like my aunt, I would choose the power to be invisible. I freely admit that I think it fits my personality well. I want to be unseen, just blend into the background and not be noticed. I think I have been like that most of my life. I would like to able to move around from place to place and not be noticed at all. Not that I would want to anything devious with being able to do that (although I guess you certainly could, as with any super power, hence the super villain), but to move around and not be noticed would be okay with me. I think a lot of that leads back to the shyness I deal with. Maybe some of it is that this way if I make a mistake, no one will notice it. I think that may be part of it as well. Anyway, I think it’s a pretty revealing little exercise. When I look back on some of the stories I have written, there are a number of references to being invisible or characters who can be invisible, so I am sure that reveals something about my personality as well.

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer and a special thank you to Kurt Warner and Sir Mix-a-Lot (I was really surprised to get a response from him) who took the time to give me an answer as well. On to today’s question. Since this is a long holiday weekend for most, and the beginning of the summer season, I thought I would try a related question to that. Since I do have a love for cooking and food (see my other blog at http://www.onedadskitchen.com, shameless plug) this seemed like a good one to try:

Since the summer season is upon us, if you were going on a picnic and could go anywhere you wanted, where would you go and what would you bring?

Let’s assume you could use your super powers and go any place you want and bring anything you want. There are lots of places to choose from: beaches, parks, the mountains, a deserted island, your rooftop, the Eiffel Tower,  it could be any place. Somewhere that you can relax and enjoy your picnic with whomever you want, or by yourself if you choose. Think about what you would want to bring – it can be anything as decadent or as light as you like, a nice bottle of wine, some fine cheese, or just some sandwiches or hot dogs, whatever makes you happy. Think about it and let me know. You can answer on here, or on Facebook or Twitter. I’ll also ask some people on Twitter and see if they respond. I’ll post my answer tomorrow.

Thankfully I am hitting a slower period with the work I am doing, so hopefully I have some time to do some actual creative writing for a change. I’ve been thinking so much about it lately and just haven’t had the time to do anything about it. I have a lot of ideas rattling around and I need to get them down somewhere, so hopefully I can get to it and actually get something on here. Until then I’ll keep moving along and trying to get things together to do that. If you ever have anything you would like to share, please feel free to leave a comment or contact me and I’d be happy to post whatever you like, whether it’s a question you think would be fun to ask, a poem, a story, an idea, whatever you’ve got. Until next time, enjoy your day and don’t forget to do something creative today!
